Job Summary

The post is a leadership opportunity for those interested in taking the next career step in medical education to develop their skills as a medical educator, leading on one of the Department’s innovative undergraduate placements in primary care. The Medicine in the Community Apprenticeship (MICA) is an 8-week placement in year 3 of the MBBS curriculum, based at a GP practice in London. The placement also incorporates core primary care departmental teaching and Student Selected Choice modules (SSCs) in a broad range of primary care topics. Each of these have their own SSC Lead. The post holder will lead the year 3 MICA placement as a whole and have oversight of the SSC leads. 

The post holder will be required to develop, deliver and evaluate the MICA placement supported by the Undergraduate Primary Care Education Unit.

Duties and responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Lead the year 3 MICA placement
  • Create teaching materials related to the educational programme
  • Develop new and innovative departmental and practice-based teaching sessions where appropriate
  • Work with the leads for the Student Selected Choices (SSCs) on development and evaluation
  • Develop and evaluate effective assessments for students including the Community Action Project (CAP)
  • Liaise with GP practices and our Faculty Development Team to ensure sufficient recruitment and quality assurance
  • Work with our Faculty Development Team to address student feedback of placements and teaching, and to address issues that may arise with GP tutors and the learning environment at Practices
  • Liaise with the Faculty Education Office (FEO) over any student-related issues
  • Work closely with the Phase 1c team to ensure MICA is integrated effectively within the Phase 1c teaching programme
  • Oversee MICA placement evaluation projects
  • Work 4 sessions per week. The post holder will be expected to be on site on Wednesdays and for any other sessions (e.g. teaching sessions) which are based on site Two sessions each week must fall on Wednesdays and one session each week must fall on Thursday mornings.
  • Host students at their Practice where possible.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively
  • Attend a variety of meetings including School of Medicine Phase 1 meetings, to discuss developments of the undergraduate GP curriculum

Essential Criteria

  • Certificate of Completion of Training in General Practice or equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • MRCGP
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education
  • Experience of designing and developing a course or placement and mapping learning outcomes to materials
  • Evidence of teaching experience within a higher education institution
  • Experience in undergraduate medical education and a commitment to general practice as a focus and setting for undergraduate learning
  • Strong skills, knowledge and achievement in clinical general practice
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, academics, clinicians and administrative staff
  • Evidence of effective personal time management
