Role Summary
The Physician Associate programme at the University of Birmingham is one of the largest and longest established Physician Associate programmes in the UK, and is innovative, delivering teaching and learning using problem-based and case-based learning. As well as the post-graduate diploma, we also run a distance learning ‘top up’ MSc in physician associate studies, allowing UK trained PAs with a PGDip in PA studies to complete a dissertation project.
Due to increasing popularity of the Masters component of our programme, the opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Physician Associate or Doctor to join our team. With Physician Associates about to become regulated by the General Medical Council, this is the ideal opportunity for someone who is interested in PA and Medical Education to be able to join the team, as part of the College of Medical & Dental Sciences and contribute to the design and implementation of a new exciting curriculum.
Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment; and (b) enhancement of the student experience and employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, and (b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
Person Specification
We are seeking either a Physician Associate (with at least 2 years post-qualification experience in either primary or secondary care, who is currently registered on the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register) or a Medical doctor (possessing an MBChB with at least 2 years post-qualification experience). Other appropriate experience will be considered on an ad hoc basis – get in touch to discuss further. Candidates must have a MSc or higher academic qualification due to the requirement of MSc dissertation supervision.
The successful candidate will demonstrate experience of teaching at University level or of delivering teaching in a clinical environment, preferably with experience of designing, managing and delivering teaching and an interest in supervising masters level dissertations. There will be opportunity for the right candidate to get involved with teaching and assessment on the PGDip aspects of the course, which can be discussed based on personal interest.
The successful candidate will demonstrate skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others, will have excellent communication skills and be a team worker successfully at all levels. They should have the ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes, and a PGCert in higher education is desirable.
Informal enquires can be made to Kate Straughton, Physician Associate Programme Director, email: k.f.straughton@bham.ac.uk
