Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as associate professor in Molecular Eucaryotic Cellular Biology from 1. January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The department consists of four sections, with the associate professor being a part of the Molecular and Medical Biology Section. This group focuses on conducting research and teaching fundamental molecular biology topics, often with a biomedical or application-oriented approach. The group work with both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, exploring areas such as host-pathogen interactions, antimicrobial peptides, bacterial and human physiology, cell biology, cancer development, structural characterizations of proteins, and metabolic disorders.
Their research utilizes a diverse range of molecular and biochemical techniques.

The Department of Science and Environment provides a well-established shared infrastructure equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including fluorescence confocal microscopy, NGS platform, mass spectrometry, HPLC, NMR, cell culturing, GMO2, and Biosafety Level 2 laboratories.

Responsibilities and tasks

The Associate Professor’s primary responsibilities will encompass research, including publication/academic dissemination and scientific communication, as well as research-based teaching with associated examination obligations. The Associate Professor is expected to be willing and capable of teaching subjects that are central to the relevant curriculum. Additionally, the position requires the sharing of knowledge with society at large, including participation in public debates and outreach activities. Furthermore, the Associate Professor is expected to secure research grants, manage research projects, provide guidance and supervision to Assistant Professors and researchers, and participate in academic assessments and other tasks as requested by the Department.

The ideal candidate for the position is expected to:

  • Conduct fundamental and/or applied research in the physiological processes at the molecular and cellular level in mammalian cells.
  • Run the departments confocal microscopy and bioimaging facility.
  • Be enterprising and possess good communication skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities,
  • Being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department and outside of the department.
  • Possess the ability to teach in English immediately and achieve proficiency in Danish no later than 2 years after appointment, ensuring effective engagement in teaching activities, as well as academic and administrative duties at the university. 

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a relevant PhD degree and qualifications equivalent to a completed employment period as an Assistant Professor in the fields of Molecular Biology, Biomedicine, or related areas.

The candidate should document the following characteristics:

  • An internationally recognized research profile in molecular eucaryotic cell biology, with a particular emphasis on developmental biology and molecular cellular physiology.
  • Ability to secure external funding.
  • Excellent networking capabilities.
  • Teaching experience in molecular biology and/or biomedicine.
  • A strong interest in and experience with project-based teaching and interdisciplinary supervision.
