An Australian woman who was killed alongside her Dutch partner in a landslide in Bali has been identified.

Angelina Smith, 47, and Luciano Kross, 50, died when their villa in Jatiluwih village was swept away about 6am on Thursday while they were still sleeping.

The couple, who live in Bali along with Mr Kross’ two sons, were reportedly on holiday and had checked into the Yeh Baat villa about 8pm on Wednesday, the Brisbane Times reported.

Mr Kross posted a series of photos to social media on Wednesday, showing the villa situated in the middle of dense jungle and sweeping grasslands, with the caption: “Ancient paradise”.

A deluge of rain hit the holiday island on Thursday morning, causing the landslide, local disaster mitigation agency official I Nyoman Srinadha Giri said.

“The victims were evacuated from the debris while in sleeping (positions),” he told AFP.

“There were two victims, a man and a woman in one bed.”

Water canals that sat above the villa – designed for irrigation – were reportedly eroded by the severe rain and triggered the fatal landslide.

The bodies of the victims were transferred to a hospital in Denpasar, the capital of the province.

It comes as intense rain on Sumatra Island last week caused landslides and floods, killing at least 27 people.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said consular assistance was being provided to the Ms Smith’s family.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” they said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further comment.”
