Canada is deeply concerned by the rapid increase in humanitarian needs arising from the conflict in Sudan, which has displaced more than 1.4 million people within the country and forced another 470,000 to flee to neighbouring countries since mid-April.

Today, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, announced that Canada is providing $40 million in additional international assistance funding, including $34 million in humanitarian assistance funding to address urgent needs in Sudan and neighbouring Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

Canada’s humanitarian assistance funding will help provide emergency health services, food and nutrition assistance, protection services and essential life-saving support such as shelter, water and sanitation. The funding announced today also includes $6 million in development funding to support critical, complementary programming in areas such as education in emergencies and sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response.
