In an exciting period of investment and expansion in the field of oncology at the University of Liverpool we are seeking to appoint a new clinical professor of medical or clinical (or surgical) oncology, to be a strategic leader in our cancer research.
The role is a joint appointment with Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and will involve spending time working within the local NHS trust. This role represents an exciting opportunity to support the growth of this exciting field within the city of Liverpool, in the context of a strong commitment from both the University and the local trust to investing in cancer research and care.
The role sits within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, the Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology and the Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine. The wider institute is focused on conducting world-leading research, with the aim of answering important biological and biomedical questions about health and disease. The mission of the Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine in particular is to optimise effective collaborations between scientists and clinicians, with the aim of finding better ways to detect and treat cancer.
The new Chair will join an innovative University that is passionate about inspiring people to learn and achieve, that celebrates individuality and ingenuity, energy and enterprise, and is committed to enhancing both student experience and research excellence. They will provide leadership within their appointed department as well as in a clinical setting at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, whilst carrying out independent research and contributing to teaching. The Chair will help focus our clinical and translational research to achieve excellence, and to lead by example and by offering support to university and NHS colleagues. You will contribute to executive decision making for the faculty and university.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is one of Europe’s leading cancer research hospitals with an increasing portfolio of clinical trials and growing links with academic institutions across the UK and globally. It recently became part of a Biomedical Research Centre in partnership with The Royal Marsden and joined the NIHR Liverpool CRF earlier this year. Clatterbridge became a partner in Liverpool ECMC in 2017 and has a focus on early phase clinical trials, with a dedicated unit for this activity. Clatterbridge is situated in the heart of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter and has its own Biobank to support research across Cheshire and Merseyside.
Strong candidates will have a sustained and continuing record of excellence in a clinical academic post which has contributed to the advancement of knowledge in Oncology and is highly recognised both nationally and internationally. Clinical training to Consultant level is essential as is a strong track record of attracting external research funding from a range of sources and experience of teaching at both UG and PG level. Strong candidates will be highly able, enthusiastic, and capable of inspiring those around them. The successful candidate will need to hit the ground running and operate within a fast-paced environment. Collaborative and inclusive working is essential. This will be between the NHS trust and the University, across the wider university, and beyond.
