A teacher who avoided work for 20 years has finally been sacked.

Cinzio Paolina De Lio, who has been described as Italy’s worst employee, used sick leave, holiday time and permits to attend conferences in order to avoid lessons.

She was meant to be teaching literature and philosophy at a secondary school near Venice but rarely showed up, The Times reports.

When she did turn up to work she ignored pupils, made up lessons on the spot and borrowed textbooks from children.

Students went on strike after De Lio handed out marks that bore no relation to work handed in and sent text messages throughout oral exams.

She was sacked by her school but went to court to get her job back.

However the court reversed its decision to reinstate her after it was discovered she had only worked four years out of 24.

The court’s decision had to be confirmed by the supreme court due to the difficulties in sacking public sector workers.

De Lio was described by the Italian supreme court as “permanently and absolutely unsuitable” for the job, despite her claims to have three degrees.

She refused a request for comment from Italian journalists because she was “at the beach”.
