The opportunity:
The School of Geosciences is seeking to recruit a motivated and experienced individual as the Climate Mast Technician.
The successful applicant will join a growing and dynamic school within the College of Science and Engineering located on the University’s King’s Buildings campus, the post will be predominantly based in the field at the Dundee Climate Mast site.
The post holder will provide critical specialist technical support to tight deadlines and expertise to School of GeoSciences in setting up and running a new capital investment project for atmospheric composition measurement. The post will be heavily involved in fieldwork at the Dundee site designated for a 100 m climate mast. Further information can be found at blogs.ed.ac.uk/soar. Experience of maintaining scientific instrumentation is vital.
The main responsibilities of the role include
- Setting up and maintaining instrumentation in the new laboratory on the ground, which includes air sampling lines, carrier gas lines and marrying components for complete instrument setups.
- Experience in working with field deployable scientific instrumentation
- Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations and experience in writing risk assessments.
- Experience working with compressed gases
- Experience working with diverse array of colleagues (e.g. field site owners, collaborating scientists, staff in IT and procurement)
- Knowledge of Linux and Windows based operating platforms and use of software such as MS Excel
- Helping to plan ahead to understand what will be needed at the site and ordering and organising new components or consumables for the new facility and working with collaborators on their needs
- Helping commission the new facility to involve being on location when the tall tower and other components are being built or delivered. Liaising with the contractors at the site.
- Liaising with the Project PI and other staff in the School of Geosciences multiple times a week to push forward commissioning. Working with contractors and ensure the scientific dimension is met during the setup period.
This role is UE06 and is available on a fixed term basis for a period of 8 months.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- Previous experience in the setup and use of automated environmental monitoring instrumentation
- Experience in the use of compressed gases
- Driving license and willingness to drive regularly for field work
