The Community Based Medical Education (CBME) team seeks to appoint Tutors to deliver Clinical Debrief small group teaching in Year 1 and 3 of the MBChB programme.

These posts are suitable for a GP keen to gain experience in academic work and Medical Education.

The MBChB programme is an integrated curriculum with Years 1 and 2 delivering the basic sciences that underpin the foundations of medicine and including Early Clinical Experience. Years 3 and 4 emphasise learning through clinical experience. The final year integrates learning from the previous years and prepares students for practice. Students are educated at the University and in NHS facilities across the North West of England and North Wales.

ECE-D tutors will facilitate small group online sessions to Year 1 students using the zoom platform. Within a 4 hour window, 2 x 90 minute sessions would be delivered to 2 groups of 6 students. Students will remain with the same tutor for the academic year. Sessions in the early years have increased structure to allow for development of early clinical reasoning skills in a safe space. The first 3 sessions involve watching a recorded GP consultation using the virtual primary care (VPC) platform with group debrief and activities to support learning. The last session will take place after students have attended their 1 day GP placements. This session will give students a space to discuss their experiences and consider the clinical reasoning around cases they have seen. You must be able to facilitate all 4 sessions listed for this role.

Clinical Debrief Tutors are clinically active GPs who facilitate small-group teaching sessions at the base Teaching Hospitals and Associated Teaching Hospitals, reinforcing experiential learning on placement. Sessions run for 2hrs 15 mins and are held weekly. Students bring cases for discussion from any clinical setting. The tutor facilitates learning using clinical reasoning methods and by stimulating debate. Clinical Debrief also provides a safe environment to discuss experiences from week and the impact of working in a clinical environment. Tutors help students recognise and develop their emerging professional identities, and facilitate discussion and activities which prepare students for placement and practice.

Clinical Debrief facilitation takes place once a week over two semesters, one 14 weeks and one 10 weeks, between October and March. Location, days and times are variable thus appointments are influenced by availability of tutors matching the sessions. Year 3 CD is delivered face-to-face with groups based at the four teaching hospitals and associated DGHs.

As part of the application process, applicants will need to send their CV and a personal statement detailing how they meet the person specification, with particular reference to experience of clinical reasoning and small group teaching.

Please email your CV and personal statement to clinicaldebrief@manchester.ac.uk by Sunday 2nd July 2023. Applicants will be considered as applications are received, so please don’t wait until the last minute to submit.
