Fixed Term contract up to 4 years

Main Duties

The post-holder’s clinical responsibilities include immunology and allergy outpatient clinics, in patient referrals and laboratory clinical liaison. There will be opportunity to attend other specialist clinics to ensure a comprehensive training as required by the current curriculum and to allow the candidate to pursue specialist interests. The post-holder will contribute to laboratory reporting, quality, and management.

The appointee is encouraged to develop a programme of research in line with current areas of interest in immunology and/or haemato-oncology. Extensive research facilities are available within the University of Birmingham and the University Hospitals Birmingham; collaborative research projects are in progress with other departments and are actively encouraged.

Post-holders will have teaching responsibilities contributing to undergraduate and post graduate immunology education to mixed disciplines. There will be opportunity to teach within small group and lecture formats and contribute to exam setting and curriculum updates.

Scope of the Role

The successful candidate will be appointed to the West Midlands Clinical Immunology specialist training scheme. 

Clinical placement will be divided between Allergy and Immunology clinics at University Hospitals Birmingham with the opportunity to join joint clinics and other specialty clinics for experience. The post holder will participate in local, regional and national MDT work with multiple specialties. The laboratory duties will include contributing to clinical reporting and clinical liaison for a wide range of specialist immunology, neuro-immunology, autoimmune, allergy and chemistry tests. The candidate will have the option for training in flow based integrated haemato-oncology reporting.

Academic placement will be under the supervision of Professor Richter and Dr Adrian Shields in the Clinical Immunology Service within the Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy directed by Professor David Wraith. The lecturer will be expected to develop research interests in line with those of the Centre, with a view to applying for fellowship funding. They will be opportunity to develop basic science and or translational research collaborations within and outside the institute and will be encouraged to develop their own national and international networks.

The lecturer will be reviewed carefully from both the academic and clinical training perspective during their tenure. Academic training will be assessed annually during a personal development plan and Clinical training by the West Midlands training committee.

Person Specification

  • Higher degree (or thesis under submission).
  • Previous experience in Immunology at specialist trainee level
  • Laboratory experience
  • Teaching experience at either undergraduate or postgraduate level
  • Excellent communication skills
