A video that inadvertently captured a deadly “shark attack” in Mexico could shed light on whether a crocodile was actually to blame.

Canadian Joseph “Jeff” Bynens, 76, was swimming in the waters of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo on December 14 when he was bitten by a predator that chewed off most of his leg, according to Jam Press.

Bynens died of excessive blood loss, while his female companion who was also bitten by the same creature was treated in the hospital.

A shark was initially believed to be responsible, but doctors found the injuries to be more consistent with a crocodile bite, according to the report.

The deadly incident was captured in the background of a video of Marlene Luviano playing with her toddler daughter on the beach.

The woman had asked her father to film the pair because it was her daughter’s birthday.

The terrifying footage captured Bynens swimming to a buoy and waving for help before being dragged under the water.

“We were enjoying the morning on the beach and that’s when we heard something in the sea,” Luviano said.

By the time Bynens was rescued, he had already “bled to death,” according to the woman.

“When they dragged him out of the sea, the wound was already very visible. I noticed there was no longer any blood coming out,” she reportedly said.

The violent death came days after María Fernanda Martínez Jiménez, 26, was killed by a shark in Melaque, some 500 miles to the north, as she swam with her young child.
