The Drug Discovery Unit is passionate about tackling unmet medical need for globally important diseases that kill millions of people across the world every year and damage the economies of many countries.

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) group. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation of new methodologies within the group while, at the same time, providing in vitro DMPK assay and LC-MS/MS bioanalytical support across drug discovery programmes. The post is therefore suited to an individual with broad experience in laboratory techniques gained over several years in the pharmaceutical industry, contract research and/or academia, a deep understanding of the molecular basis of these techniques, and who would like to apply their skills in the search for new molecules to tackle major global diseases.

This is a unique opportunity to grow your expertise in industry-style drug discovery within an academic setting. The in vitro DMPK and bioanalytical laboratories are well equipped to meet the demands required of an early drug discovery organisation, with automated liquid-handling and cell culture facilities alongside several UHPLC/MS systems. Working across several teams and liaising with experts in different disciplines, you will be uniquely placed to influence the future development of our methodology. Our busy public engagement programme offers an opportunity to gain new skills and inspire people beyond the DDU with the work you do.

Your responsibilities:

  • Running in vitro assays for characterisation of properties such as metabolic stability and permeability
  • Sample analysis by LC-MS/MS in support of in vitro and in vivo assays
  • Data analysis and interpretation, ensuring appropriate quality assurance / control
  • Identification, development and deployment of new and innovative assays to meet project requirements
  • Design of student projects and direct supervision of students while on site

Your qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in pharmacology, life sciences or similar
  • Several years’ experience of cell culture, in vitro DMPK methodology and LC-MS/MS bioanalysis gained within a pharmaceutical, contract research or academic research environment
