An Australian man is potentially facing up to two years in a Bali jail after being charged with violently assaulting an Indonesian woman he met on Tinder.

Police allege Drew Donal Ireland, 28, became violent during an argument over money inside a Kuta hotel room on June 4.

It is alleged he met up with the 33-year-old woman at Seminyak Beach before the pair returned to his room at the Kedin’s Inn Hotel.

The evening allegedly took a turn about 6.30pm, when the woman reportedly asked for him to pay back a sum of 1.5 million rupia or the equivalent of $AUD 150.

Police claim Mr Ireland threatened to kill the woman before becoming violent.

The woman attended a local police station with injuries to her head, face, and body after the alleged assault.

The Perth resident was arrested that night after police located him 500m from his hotel.

Officers then searched the hotel room where they discovered a stash of weapons including gel blasters, five air rifles, two knives and two iron sticks

Denpasar police chief Bambang Yugo Pamungkasis said Mr Ireland told the woman he was a Special Forces soldier training an Indonesian sniper team at a nearby military base, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

He was charged with assault and is facing up to two years’ and eight months in jail.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said it is providing consular assistance to an Australian man detained in Indonesia.
