Doctoral Studentship (PhD) Drumming, physical activity and wellbeing

Stipend: £18,622 per annum

Contract Type: Full Time (3 years)

Hartpury University is pleased to offer this exciting project examining physical activity and wellbeing using drumming as part of its continued work as part of the renowned Clem Burke Drumming Project.  The Clem Burke Drumming Project was co-founded by Prof Steve Draper and is a collaborative project with University of Chichester, Essex University and King’s College London. The successful candidate will conduct a programme of research investigating drumming as a physical activity intervention.The programme of work will be varied and will range from large survey work to physical activity monitoring.  The aim is to produce evidence-based guidance and to support tutors to maximise the physical and mental health benefits of drumming.  This position would suit a driven individual, willing to travel for data collection, with a passion for exercise, physical activity and health.  A passion and interest in drumming and music is desirable but not essential.

Studentships comprise of tuition fees and a stipend of GBP £18,662k per annum tenable for 3 years. Alongside their research projects, successful candidates will be asked (as a condition of their stipend) to deliver up to 7 hours per week teaching or research support within the University.

PhD Studentship Selection Criteria:

Please demonstrate the following criteria in your CV and/or covering letter:

  • Essential undergraduate degree or MSc in a field relating to the project
  • Essential quantitative data analysis skills in Excel.
  • Desirable skill/experience of working with others in a research setting and/or industry experience
  • Ability/willingness to travel to yards to work alongside saddle fitters

Candidates should also be aware of the following:

The normal expectation is that applicants will hold at least a 2:1 or a Masters qualification from a UK university or a degree of comparable standing from a university outside the UK. The candidate’s degree relevant to the studentship should demonstrate their potential for practice-led research or alternative evidence of research aptitude.

Applicants whose first language is not English require a recognized English language qualification. The minimum entry requirement is GCSE English at grade C or above or IELTS score 7.0 or TOEFL score 600 (or demonstrable equivalent).

17th July 2023: Interviews at Hartpury*

31st July 2023: Deadline for accepting studentship

September 2023: Studentship begins
