A powerful earthquake has rocked Indonesia’s eastern region of Papua.

The magnitude 6.5 earthquake was located 162km northeast of Abepura, a district of Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency said.

The agency said the quake had a depth of about 10km and hit early Sunday morning.

There have been no reports of serious damage or injuries.

There is no danger of a tsunami but the agency warned possible aftershocks may be felt in surrounding areas.

It isn’t the first time a shallow earthquake hit the province, with the area being hit in February resulting in the deaths of four people when a floating restaurant collapsed into the ocean.

Indonesia is often hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions as a result of being located on the Ring of Fire.

The Ring of Fire is a row of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake on November 21 killed more than 300 people and injured almost 600 when it hit Cianjur in West Java.
