Disturbing audio recordings from the night before US teen school shooter Ethan Crumbley committed mass murder has been played in court.
Crumbley, now 16, was previously found to have used a semiautomatic handgun to open fire on teenage students in the halls of Oxford High School, in the US state of Detroit, on November 30, 2021.
The four students killed were Tate Myre, 16, Hana St. Juliana, 14, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Justin Shilling, 17.
The disturbed teen also wounded six other pupils and a teacher.
“My name is Ethan Crumbley, age 15, and I am going to be the next school shooter,” he was heard saying in the audio, played by prosecutors at a hearing to determine whether he should be sentenced to life in prison with no parole, CNN reported.
“I’ve thought about this a lot. I can’t stop thinking about it. But it’s constantly in my head,” he was heard saying during the hearing on Thursday (local time).
He reportedly looked down at the defence table as his voice played.
In another recording, he said: “I’m gonna have so much fun tomorrow”.
Crumbley also spoke about hating his life and his desire to teach others a “lesson” by shooting up his school.
“I will walk behind someone, and I will shoot a bullet into their skull. And that’s the first victim,” another part of a recording said.
“I’m gonna open fire on everyone in the hallway … I will try to hit as many people as I can. I will reload, and I will find people hiding. I want to teach them a lesson of how they are wrong, of how they are being brainwashed.”
Earlier in the day, some of his journal entries were read from a journal recovered from his backpack in a school bathroom after the shooting.
Prosecutor Marc Keast told the court Crumbley successfully executed plans he had written about in the diary.
“I want to shoot up the school so f***ing badly,” one entry read.
“The first victim has to be a pretty girl with a future so she can suffer just like me,” he wrote in another.
The first of his victims was a female student, lieutenant Phoebe Arthur confirmed.
“I will continue shooting people until police breach the building,” the shooter wrote.
“I will then surrender to them and plead guilty to life in prison.”
Crumbley pleaded guilty in October to a slew of murder and terrorism charges. Prosecutors have said they’ll seek a life sentence with no chance for parole.
The teen’s parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, are also facing charges of involuntary manslaughter for failing to keep the gun used in the shooting secure at home and failing to reasonably care for their son when he showed signs of mental distress.
Ven Johnson, a lawyer representing the victims and their families, told the Detriot News his clients feel “like the legal system has failed them.”
He said he plans to appeal Brennan’s ruling to the Michigan Court of Appeals.
“On behalf of our Oxford clients, we are deeply saddened and disappointed by Judge Brennan’s dismissal today of all the Oxford Community Schools defendants,” Johnson said.
“We maintain that [Michigan’s] governmental immunity laws are wrong and unconstitutional, and … should be changed immediately.”
The school district didn’t return messages.
