The Department of Natural Sciences is a large and vibrant academic department encompassing learning, teaching, research, and knowledge transfer in the fields of Biosciences, Medical Science and Technology and Environmental, Occupational and Public Health. The Department is located within the Faculty of Science and Technology and forms one of five departments. The other departments are Computer Science, Design Engineering and Mathematics, Psychology and the London Sports Institute.
The Department has a dedicated team of over 75 specialist academic and technical staff support over 1,500 students in London and at a number of collaborative partners. It enjoys the excellent facilities offered at the Hendon Campus, including specialist laboratories in the Hatchcroft Building and the new StoneX facilities that provide for vibrant teaching and research portfolios.
The high research capability of the Department is reflected in several areas of strengths which coalesce in the flourishing research centres and groups, including the Flood Hazard Research Centre and the Centre for Investigative and Diagnostic Oncology. The Department is building on its strong REF 2021 outcomes where they entered two Units of Assessment Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy and Geography and Environmental Studies.
The ambition is to continue growing and diversifying, whilst ensuring that the quality of provision is maintained, and student experiences and achievements are enhanced.
The postholder will work alongside the Academic Dean, the four other Heads of Departments, two Deputy Deans and the Technical Manager to provide leadership and management in shaping the future of the Faculty.
In terms of leadership roles, the Head of Department role, is supported by five Director of Programmes representing the large UG and PG provision covering student success, quality assurance and directing operations. The Departmental Leadership team also comprises Research Leads, Research Degree Coordinator, Ethics and Employability leads to aid the Head of Department in consolidating strategy for the department. Candidates should have high academic standing and potential for a Professorial appointment, with the required credibility to lead the department and contribute to the Faculty Leadership Team.
The role is based at Hendon and the post-holder is expected to spend a majority of the working week on campus and live within commuting distance of campus during the week.
