We are delighted to be recruiting Research Managers to join us here in Southampton at a really exciting time for our organisation as we increase the breadth of the work deliver for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and we invest in our teams to support this.  

Who are we?

The NIHR funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people’s health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth. Our research provides those working in the NHS, public health, global health and social care with the evidence they need to better support patients, the public and people who need care.

What will you do?

Research Management is an interesting and varied role, and includes:

  • Management and delivery of a portfolio of work.
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships at all levels, including with public and patients.
  • Prioritising your workload and leading on improvements to working practices.
  • Rationalising and communicating complex problems/issues and taking or recommending appropriate action.
  • Depending on team there may be some line management duties.
  • Please note you will not be undertaking research yourself; this is a research management role where you will oversee a stage of research.

We have Research Managers overseeing the whole life cycle of the research process. Whilst we appreciate candidates may have an interest in a particular area, we do expect our Research Managers to be flexible in their approach to work and willing to work across different teams. We also find working across the business helps to enhance staff skills and development. 

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for passionate individuals who are hard-working, dedicated, and flexible in their approach. Key skills required are:

  • Understanding the health research landscape, with knowledge and experience of a relevant research management activity.
  • Able to develop and maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to critically appraise research evidence and data. 
  • Excellent writing, analytical and critical appraisal skills.
  • Able to understand and interpret complex medical and scientific literature.
