Women were shot and stabbed in the genitals by Hamas terrorists with a number brutally gang raped as they died, in just a handful of many harrowing accounts of sexual violence carried out by the terrorist group.
In an investigation published on Thursday, TheNew York Times detailed a series of accounts of women who have been raped, mutilated and killed by Hamas terrorists during their October 7 attack on Israel, following a two-month investigation.
Photographs viewed by the publication show a woman’s corpse with dozens of nails driven into her thighs and groin, while a video provided by the Israeli military, showed two dead Israeli soldiers who appeared to have been shot in their vaginas.
They form just one of the many harrowing accounts that have come out of Israel in the two months since the brutal attack.
In another video seen by the publication, a female with a burned face, who became known as “the woman in the black dress” is seen sprawled on her back on the side of the road, with her legs spread and vagina exposed.
The grainy footage was taken by another woman who was searching for a friend after she went missing during the Supernova music festival on October 7 when Hamas killed 1,200 people and seized 240 hostages.
The footage went viral and the woman was eventually identified to be mother of two, Gal Abdush, from central Israel, the publication reports.
Ms Abdush attended the Supernova music festival with her husband, while her two sons, Eliav, 10, and Refael, 7, were staying at their Aunt’s house.
Both have now been left orphaned.
According to TheNew York Times, Ms Abdush and her husband became trapped among other cars on highway Route 232, when Hamas terrorists descended on the area.
“We’re on the border,” Ms Abdush texted her family. “We’re leaving.”
The couple, who had been together since they were teenagers, were later found dead, both badly burned.
Israeli police officials said they believed Ms Abdush was raped, based on video evidence, verified by The New York Times.
Four other witnesses also recounted seeing women raped and killed on the same highway Ms Abdush was found.
One witness, a 24-year-old identified as Sapir, told the publication she saw Hamas rape and stab multiple women while hidignng in a tree just off Route 232, about 6km southwest of the party.
She said she watched as one woman was stabbed with a knife in her back while being penetrated by a terrorist, and witnessed another woman who was “shredded into pieces” and had her breast cut off by another.
“One continues to rape her, and the other throws her breast to someone else, and they play with it, throw it, and it falls on the road,” Sapir said.
Earlier this month, Yoni Saadon, a 39-year-old father of four, told the UK’s Sunday Times he is still haunted by the traumatic scenes he witnessed at the festival.
“I saw this beautiful woman with the face of an angel and eight or 10 of the fighters beating and raping her,” he said.
“She was screaming, ‘Stop it already! I’m going to die anyway from what you are doing, just kill me!’
“When they finished, they were laughing, and the last one shot her in the head.”
Mr Saadon said he witnessed the gruesome act after pulling over him the body of a slain woman who had also been shot in the head — and smearing her blood on himself so it looked like he, too, was dead.
“I will never forget her face,” he said. “Every night I wake to it and apologise to her, saying, ‘I’m sorry.’”
Yael Sherer, a spokeswoman for Israel’s Survivors of Sexual Violence advocacy group, confirmed there is evidence of sexual violence against both men and women.
“There was sexual violence and rape in these communities in the south of Israel … we have a few living survivors – not a lot – of both genders. It didn’t only happen to women, it happened to men as well,” she told BBC Radio 4.
“Aside from finding bodies of people who were murdered, a lot of the bodies were mutilated … terrorists made sure to disgrace these people and dishonour them.”
Meni Binyamin, the head of the International Crime Investigations Unit of the Israeli police, also confirmed “dozens” of women and men have been sexually abused.
“We are investigating sexual crimes against both women and men perpetrated by Hamas terrorists,” he told the New York Times.
“There were violent rape incidents, the most extreme sexual abuses we have seen, of both women and men. I am talking about dozens.”
Hamas has denied allegations of sexual violence.
Israeli police are currently building cases against Hamas terrorists who committed sexual assaults October 7.
The United Nations — after nearly eight weeks of silence — has also launched its own inquiry into the sexual violence.
“There are numerous accounts of sexual violence during the abhorrent acts of terror by Hamas on 7 October that must be vigorously investigated and prosecuted,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.
“Gender-based violence must be condemned. Anytime. Anywhere.”
