An armed man has driven a car with two children inside onto the tarmac at Germany’s Hamburg Airport, forcing it into lockdown in what police believe is a “hostage situation”.

The gunman rammed through a security gate onto the tarmac of the airport and fired a weapon twice in the air at about 8pm on Saturday local time, police said.

“There is currently a major police operation on the tarmac at Hamburg Airport,” Hamburg Police wrote on X.

“We are on site with a large contingent of emergency services. We are currently assuming a static hostage situation,” they added.

Police said no one appeared to be injured and at least two people, including a child, were in the car. Local media are reporting the incident involved two children.

German newspaper Bild daily reported the children’s mother had alerted police to a possible kidnapping shortly before the incident.

Police said the they “are currently assuming a custody dispute is the background to the operation”.

Officers have made contact with the suspect and the car remains parked in the apron area of the airport.

In a statement on social media, Hamburg Airport said there “will be no more takeoffs and landings today, November 4th” due to the unfolding police operation.
