This three-year funded PhD opportunity is housed within the Department of Life Sciences and Institute of Sport at Manchester Metropolitan University. Work will be done in partnership with Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

This unique project provides applicants with the opportunity to undertake an original multi-disciplinary impactful programme of applied research by working with heart failure patients, their clinical carers, and academic researchers. Core to the project is the impact of cardiac resynchronisation therapy on cardiovascular, cognitive, and exercise domains. Respect and empathy towards patients and effective working with the clinical and academic teams is essential. Student must be passionate and will require effective time management and organisation to screen and recruit patients, schedule experiments, collect and analyse data, and present findings.

The successful candidate will have experience of conducting cardiovascular research preferably using in-vivo and ex-vivo models in hospital setting.

Aims and objectives

The purpose of this study is to investigate the functional impact of cardiac resynchronisation therapy in heart failure patients with and without atrial fibrillation which extends beyond cardiac remodelling to vascular health, cognitive function and self-selected exercise performance.

Specific requirements of the project

Essential

  • A minimum of an honours degree at first or upper second class level in a relevant subject area
  • Demonstrate professionalism and adherence to ethical standards at all times
  • Be respectful of and demonstrate empathy towards vulnerable individuals (heart failure patients)
  • The ability to work independently and to effectively manage time
  • Ability to work productively and collaboratively within a fast-paced team environment
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Highly motivated, resilient and with the determination to succeed
  • The ability to undertake, manage, and deliver research projects on time
  • The ability to work across multiple sites (Manchester and Liverpool) and manage travel accordingly
  • Adhere to principles of equality, diversity and inclusion in practice at all times
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Desirable

  • Experience of conducting vascular ultrasonographic imaging, transcranial doppler ultrasonography and/or biomechanics research.
  • Experience of working on cardiovascular research studies ideally in a hospital and/or with patients.
  • Experience of successfully collecting venous blood samples.
  • Valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certificate
