Police have rushed to a stabbing at the British Museum.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous body harm following the incident close to the tourist attraction in Great Russell Street, central London, on Tuesday morning BST.

The victim, also a man, has been taken to hospital.

Police have said there is “no outstanding risk to the public”.

The museum is understood to have been evacuated, with witnesses saying they have received no information about when it will reopen.

One said: “British Museum being evacuated after some ‘incident’.”

A second added: “British Museum just closed due to unexpected circumstances.”

The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service have been contacted for more information.

The British Museum, in Bloomsbury, offers a huge collection of art and antiquities from ancient and living cultures – spanning over two million years of human life.
