Applications are sought for this new role, which represents an excellent opportunity for an academic to join the MBBS team in a leadership role, and make a key contribution to the training of future doctors.
The appointee will academically lead, plan operationalise and contribute to the ongoing development and delivery of a longitudinal curriculum and assessment programme for quality improvement, and audit in secondary care, through the SGUL MBBS Curriculum. This will be achieved in consultation with the MBBS leadership team, and with the support of the relevant Year Leads, Module leads and the program administration team.
The MBBS Programme at St George’s currently admits approximately 280 students annually. This includes The Academic Lead for Year 1 in the MBBS 5 programme is an established role, responsible for overseeing the academic operations of the year. The appointee, who could be a Basic Scientist or a Clinician, will have overarching responsibility for co-ordinating and quality assuring the teaching of Year 1 of the MBBS5 Programme. This will be achieved in consultation with, and with the support of the MBBS Leadership team, teaching staff, the MBBS Curriculum development and the MBBS program administration teams.
The role requires ability to commit time flexibly over the working week throughout the academic year, with some periods busier than others. Overall, the commitment is 200h per year.
The medicine Programme at St George’s currently admits approximately 280 students annually. This includes typically 194 MBBS5 students (5 year, largely school leaver stream, including 19 of whom are international, but also including up to 30% graduates), 70 MBBS4 students (graduate entry 4 year course) and 25 Clinical Transfer students who enter T year (from the Biomedical Sciences BSc). All streams merge later in the course, but the entry requirements and approach to learning for year 1 of MBBS5 course is designed for applicants who have completed a Level 3 qualification. Graduates are not precluded from joining the M5 course in Y1, vary in numbers each year, but are aware of this from the outset.
The post holder will have input into curriculum design and review including considerations related to the online-teaching framework, and developing strategy for a hybrid delivery in the longer term. A new curriculum management system has also recently been purchased to improve both staff and student experience. Year 1 of the MBBS5 Programme encompass a mixture of lectures, expert seminars, clinical and communication skills workshops, laboratory or dissection-based practicals, and facilitated case-based learning.
The salary for this role will be dependent on the experience, qualifications, and current salary of the applicant. Below are the salary scales which should be relevant to the candidates applying. Appointment is usually made at the minimum point on these scales.
The salary range for SGUL 7 is £49,041 – £57,851 pa including London Allowance (pro-rated for part-time staff).
The salary range for SGUL 8 is £59,477 – £68,370 pa including London Allowance (pro-rated for part-time staff).
The salary range for the Clinical Lecturer Scale is £38,619– £57,498 pa including London Allowance (pro-rated for part-time staff).
The salary range for the Clinical Senior Lecturer Scale is £63,304 – £88,135 pa including London Allowance (pro-rated for part-time staff).
