March 7, 2023 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada
Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly announced new multifaceted support for Ukraine to help address its critical energy and security needs as it defends itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion. The announcement was made during the official visit to Canada of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Canada will be donating seven electrical transformers to help repair Ukraine’s power grid, which has been devastated by Russia’s ruthless attacks on civilian infrastructure. These transformers, delivered via the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism, will enable Ukrainians to power their homes and use the most basic appliances—something that was stolen from them by President Putin’s senseless war of aggression.
Additionally, in close coordination with the European Union, Canada is announcing an additional $3 million in funding to support mine action in Ukraine. This funding will bolster important recovery and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, and it complements the more than $32 million in funding that Canada is already providing to support mine action in the country.
This new support will help ensure that Ukrainians have the tools they need to address the consequences of President Putin’s war of choice. Canada will continue to coordinate with its international partners to help Ukrainians fight back against the cruelty inflicted upon them by President Putin and his accomplices.
