Barclays has announced a workforce reduction of approximately 5,000 employees as part of its ongoing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. The banking institution has already terminated 1,000 positions and anticipates an additional 4,000 layoffs by the end of this year. This reduction represents about 5% of Barclays’ global workforce.
Focus on Workforce Reduction
The cuts will primarily affect the UK retail banking sector, though some support roles are based in India, where a significant number of the job losses are expected to occur. The restructuring efforts are part of a larger modernization initiative, with AI seen as a key enhancement of the transformation strategy.
Barclays is nearing the conclusion of a three-year plan aimed at reducing costs, which has so far concentrated on its retail banking operations. However, the investment banking division is also experiencing some impact from these changes.
Profit and Financial Performance
In its latest financial disclosure, Barclays reported a profit of £2.3 billion for the three months ending in September, exceeding profits from the same period last year but falling slightly short of analysts' forecasts. Economists are scrutinizing corporate earnings closely for signs that investments in technology, including AI, are translating into operational efficiencies and reduced workforce needs.
CS Venkatakrishnan, the Group CEO of Barclays, explained that the impending job reductions were part of a significant technological investment aimed at streamlining operations. He emphasized that while AI will play a significant role moving forward, it should be viewed as the enhancement rather than the foundational aspect of the strategy.
