Hours:

Part-time (18.75)

To assist medical research by carrying out sample processing, laboratory analyses and data collection, thereby providing research support for a series of ophthalmology projects.

The post holder will join the Academic Unit of Ophthalmology (AUO) research group at the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, University of Birmingham in a 12-month part-time role for various on-going projects based around inflammatory/immune mechanisms in the ocular microenvironment. Including phenotyping ocular surface microbiomes, rapid diagnosis of severe blinding ocular infections, genetic profiling of the ocular surface and monitoring response to novel technologies in early-phase clinical trials, examining mitochondrial exhaustion in multimorbidity including diabetes (the largest cause of sight-loss in <60 years). The main work will be at the University of Birmingham’s Research Labs (UoBRL) in the Centre for Translational Inflammation Research, we work in close collaboration with the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust) that underpins the patient base, including the Behçet’s Disease National Centre of Excellence.

You will support the operational set-up and running of the Birmingham Eye Infection Database and the Ophthalmology Research Registry and Biorepository (ORRBit), UoBRL at BMEC with electronic tracking of human samples to the University Campus. Have a pivotal research role leading the processing of biosamples (eye swabs, tears, bloods, urine, faeces) taken as part of MRC, NIHR, BHP and NIH funded studies. Knowledge of the Human Tissue Act (HTA), Health Research Authority Research (HRA) ethics framework, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Quality Management Systems (QMS) for establishing

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum 2.1 Degree in relevant subject area
  • Practical experience in at least two of the following techniques: primary cell culture, flow cytometry, qPCR, Western Blotting. 
  • Willingness to learn and apply new scientific techniques
  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
  • Proficiency in commonly used software packages and experience of data analysis using statistical software
  • Ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements
  • Ability to work independently but function as part of a team
  • Knowledge of Human Tissue Act
  • Ability to work to GCLP standard.
