Applications are invited for 3.5-year fully funded PhD studentships to be held in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Cambridge.

The Magnetic Resonance Research Centre based in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology has two fully funded PhD studentships available starting October 2023. These studentships will use advanced magnetic resonance techniques to further our understanding of transport and reaction in porous media. These projects will include the development of novel magnetic resonance techniques to enable unique insights into applications of industrial relevance.

Specific research areas include:

1) Understanding heterogeneous catalytic reactions used for the production of sustainable transportation fuels.

2) Assessing the integrity and long term viability of subsurface storage media for carbon dioxide storage.

3) Advanced NMR and MRI technique development to tackle the challenges associated with measurement in the applied engineering systems in 1) and 2) above. This will also include accelerating imaging speed and improving image resolution and fidelity using non-linear acquisition and reconstruction techniques.

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals capable of thinking and working independently. Applicants should have, or shortly expect to obtain, a first or high second-class degree from a UK university, or an equivalent standard from an overseas university (please see www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/international/international-qualifications for information on non-UK degrees), in a relevant subject such as Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or a related discipline. This position is open to both UK citizens or overseas students. Full funding covering maintenance and the University composition fee is provided for these studentships, with effect from 1 October 2023.
