Police in Portugal have apologised to the parents of Madeline McCann who went missing from a resort in the country 16 years ago when she was three.
The BBC has reported that Portuguese detectives travelled to Britain earlier this year, where the McCann’s live, to make the apology to the family in person.
Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann were put officially under suspicion by police in Portugal for their daughter’s disappearance, which occurred in 2007 at a holiday home in Praia da Luz in the country’s Algarve region.
There was an accusation the girl’s death was staged and the body concealed. The BBC reported that Mrs McCann was offered a deal to admit she covered up her daughter’s death in return for a shorter sentence.
Portuguese authorities released the McCann’s from suspicion in 2008. However, a former detective in the case continued to suggest the McCann’s were involved in the disappearance.
Police have now said the initial investigations into the case were not handled properly and not enough understanding was given to the family who were from overseas and did not understand the Portuguese justice system.
Suspicions has now fallen on German national Christian Breuckner who was living in Praia de Luz when Madeleine vanished.
A German prosecutor on the case, Hans Christian Wolters, said the apology was a “good sign” as it meant there was a “development in the case”.
Breuckner is currently serving a life sentence for the 2005 rape of an elderly American woman committed in close to where the three-year-old disappeared from her family’s apartment.
In 2020, he was identified by German investigators as the prime suspect in the McCann case.
Part of the evidence being probed by police includes an alleged “confession” made by Breuckner to a friend, and analysis of the phone records that placed him at Ocean Club when Madeline disappeared.
The club is close to where the McCann’s were staying.
He was officially made a suspect in the case by Portuguese authorities last year.
Breuckner has denied any connection to the McCann case. And investigators have no proof Madeleine is dead, with no DNA or photo evidence linking the sex offender to the alleged murder.
