Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates for a position of Postdoctoral Research Associate to work across two research projects (co)lead by Professor Craig Morgan. One project focuses on interventions for psychosis and one on outcomes of psychosis. Both projects are embedded in the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health whose ethos is to ensure that the social context is recognised as central to how we think, understand, and treat mental health.
About the Projects:
The first project aims to develop an ‘Enriched Package of Social Intervention for Psychoses’ (ENRICHED). This is a funded by Maudsley Charity’s Living Well with Psychosis theme. The project aims to develop and test – in partnership with communities and expert by experience – the delivery of a package of social interventions tailored to the assessed needs of people with a psychotic disorder. The purpose of this package of social intervention is to break the cycle of entrenched social disadvantage, isolation and discrimination that act as barriers to recovery and engagement with services, reduce effectiveness of therapeutic interventions and impacts quality of life.
The second project, funded by the US National Institute of Mental Health (NIH) explores the relationships between social isolation, cognition, aging, and outcomes of psychosis. This project will involve conducting a follow-up of cohorts of individuals with a first episode of psychosis to examine course and outcome in older age groups. This project forms part of a multi-country programme of research.
About the role:
We are looking for a Research Associate with excellent knowledge of psychosis and social determinant of health to be an integral part of our established interdisciplinary team of researchers both in the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Health and the wider Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.
For both projects, you will be contributing to the successful delivery of project objectives; working closely with a team of researchers to oversee progress and meet routine deadlines. Research activities within the ENRICHED project will involve developing and delivering workshops in partnership with communities and health services, conducting surveys, and analysing data extracted from clinical health records. Research activities for the NIH-funded study will involve initiating follow-up recruitment of cohorts and data collection, analysis and management.
You will be supported to write reports and contribute to manuscripts and papers in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals in relation to these projects. We will also support you in developing your academic career, including through fellowship applications and other applications to external research funders (whether led by you or by others in the team), exploring collaborations with others, and research and wider professional skills development through local Early Career Researcher Networks and the College’s wider training programme.
About you:
We would like you to demonstrate your experience, particularly in relation to the following criteria:
- Knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods
- Proven ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse team, including with community partners and experts by experience.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills
This post will be offered on a fixed term contract until 31st December 2024 with a view to extend, funding permitted.
