Fixed Term, 24 Months

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join our newly established group which uses zebrafish as a model organism to study nervous system development.

The Opportunity:

The Almeida lab (https://discovery-brain-sciences.ed.ac.uk/our-staff/research-groups/rafael-almeida) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neuron-glia interactions during myelination in vivo. The Almeida lab uses zebrafish as a model organism to understand mechanisms and roles of non-synaptic forms of neurotransmission. We recently discovered that neurotransmitter vesicle fusion along axons regulates, and is regulated by, the process of myelination (see PMID 34270947) The post-holder will employ functional imaging, optogenetics and genetic manipulations of zebrafish to uncover the molecular basis of axonal vesicle fusion and its impact on oligodendrocytes.

Your skills and attributes for success:

We are seeking a candidate who is curious about the nervous system, driven, committed to scientific discovery and integrity, and happy to integrate a new research team. You will have

  • PhD in Neuroscience or a relevant scientific discipline
  • Experience in neurobiological research in vivo
  • Experience in live microscopy
  • Demonstrable knowledge of image analyses and statistical skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
