The School of Life Sciences at the University of Sussex is at the forefront of research in the UK. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF 2021), 100% of our Impact cases in Biological Sciences and Chemistry were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. The School has received substantial recent University investment and is embarking on an exciting and extensive, muti-million pound refurbishment and improvement project.

Based in the School of Life Sciences, the Genome Damage and Stability Centre  (http://www.sussex.ac.uk/gdsc/), is an internationally renowned Institute carrying out research on the response of cells to DNA damage, genome instability and its relationship to disease. We provide a stimulating and supportive environment and our expertise covers a range of experimental systems.

Motivated applicants are invited to apply for a UKRI-funded postdoctoral position to study the role of the nuclear periphery in genome and epigenome integrity. We will investigate whether DNA damage-induced epigenetics changes at Lamina Associated domains (LADs) are fully restored after DNA repair and decipher the interplay between genetic and epigenetic restoration at LADs. We will determine the long-term consequences of genetic and epigenetic scars in cell fitness and senescence. For visualization and mapping of breaks and epigenetic changes high end microscopy, proximity labeling, proteomics and NGS approaches will be used. Expertise in any of the above will be positively considered but not absolutely required.

Required qualifications for this position:

  • First author publication(s) in a reputable journal.
  • Highly motivated to develop new cutting end approaches.
  • Commitment to work in a highly competitive field.
  • Ability to independently drive a research project and analyse data.
  • Fluent in written /spoken English and writing scientific reports/papers.

Potential candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Prof. Evi Soutoglou before applying. E-mail: E.Soutoglou@sussex.ac.uk;
