Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Host-pathogen Genomics of Viral Infections at University of Oxford

We are looking for a highly driven Postdoctoral Research Scientist with a strong interest in Host and Pathogen genomics. This is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to further develop their research knowledge and skills within a laboratory environment based at the Peter Medawar Building in Oxford.

The post holder will work in the laboratory of Dr. Azim Ansari. You will be centrally involved in the quality control and analysis of next generation sequencing data, host and pathogen genome wide association studies, RNA-Seq and other sequencing studies as well as development and implementation of new statistical approaches to look for interaction between genetic markers and these molecular measurements, and associations (possibly nonlinear) with multivariate clinical outcomes. Genetics is a fast-moving field and you’ll be required to help keep up to date with developments in the academic literature. An important aspect of the job will be to leverage publicly available data, or research in related areas, to achieve scientific objectives. It will be expected that you will take a keen interest in research undertaken by other members of the group, and more widely, to help identify synergies.

This role also allows the chance for post holder to lead the analysis of key projects as part of a team both within the group and more widely with collaborators and colleagues. You will engage with other scientists, patient groups and medics in discussing the application of genetics in health care, as well as communicate with the group head on a regular basis, ensuring that they are kept fully up to date with progress and difficulties in the research projects.

You will be educated to PhD level or be close to completion with a quantitative component, particularly population genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics or probabilistic machine learning and computer science. This, together with some relevant experience of working with large genotyping or sequencing data sets and contributing to scientific papers as evidenced by publications are essential for this role.

You will have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team to manage the day-to-day running of a research project. It is essential that you demonstrate that you have the ability to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget. An understanding of the genetics of infectious disease is desirable. 

The post is full-time and fixed term until 30/04/2025.
