Postdoctoral Researcher in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience at University of Oxford

Location: Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join an exciting ongoing project at the interface between developmental psychology and cognitive neuroscience. We are developing and validating new methods to investigate why attention supports early mathematics learning. The project builds on a now long-standing collaboration with Computer Science and is funded by a grant awarded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Two particular objectives of this project are: 1) the integration of behavioural, eye-movement, heart rate and electroencephalographic (EEG) data to investigate attention, executive functions and mathematics learning; 2) validating the use of these techniques outside the laboratory, enabling us to take our attention to maths (“ATOM”) lab to diverse schools and diverse children. The position will involve working with an interdisciplinary team on methods development, validation and refinement, collaborating with young children, their parents and schools across England.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Experimental Psychology, Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience or allied disciplines. They will also have a keen interest in the developmental cognitive neuroscience of early attention and executive functions and / or mathematical learning. Excellent communication skills, interests in working as part of an interdisciplinary team, and the ability to manage your own research are key to the post, as is the experience of working with children and educators in schools. Expertise of analysing eye-movement and / or heart rate and / or EEG data is required. Expertise of collecting data with these methods outside the laboratory is highly desirable.

This is a full-time fixed term post for 18-months or until 30 April 2025 whichever is sooner. Part-time pro rata arrangements might be considered. The post involves travel to schools around Oxfordshire, which may be facilitated by having access to own reliable transport, although this is not essential.

The closing date for applications is midday on Tuesday 31^st October 2023. It is anticipated that interviews will be held on 22^nd November 2023. It is hoped the post-holder will be able to start in post on 1^st January 2024 or earlier if possible.
