Donald Trump has sparked a storm of speculation after a photo showing mysterious red spots on his right hand went viral online.

The 77-year-old was photographed waving at cameras as he left his Manhattan apartment for his New York defamation trial on Wednesday, with a number of red spots clearly visible on his thumb and right index finger.

The photo has led to mass speculation, as many question whether the marks could be the result of an injury or a disease.

One social media user noticed the spots weren’t visible on Trump’s hands when the Republican presidential candidate attended a rally hours earlier ahead of the primary election in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

“What happened to Trump’s hand? It wasn’t like this in New Hampshire,” one person wrote, noting the difference.

Hosts on American news talk show Morning Joe also weighed in, with co-host Joe Scarborough asking: “Do we have any answer on what’s on Donald Trump’s … his hands are bleeding.”

“Looks like he has a sore …” co-host Willie Geistsaid.

“Is that magic marker?” questioned Mika Brzezinski.

Medical experts have also put forward a few theories.

Professor from George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences suggested Trump may have simply injured himself.

“He apparently injured his hand. It’s not uncommon for 77 yo people to fall. His campaign should explain,” Professor Jonathan Reiner wrote on X.

Meanwhile Joshua Zeichner, an associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital toldBusiness Insider Trump may have a rash caused by a variety of possible factors including dry hands or from gripping his golf clubs.

Trump’s campaign has not issued a statement confirming the cause of the spots.

The former president has been in court this week for his second defamation trial.

Writer E. Jean Carroll, 80, is seeking more than $10 million alleging that Trump defamed her in 2019, when she first made her assault allegations public, by saying she “is not my type.”

“It means I’m too ugly to assault,” Carroll told the court this week.

Asked about how the comment damaged her reputation, Carroll said “previously I was known simply as a journalist, and now I’m known as a liar, a fraud, and a whack job” — quoting insults levelled at her by the 2024 White House hopeful.

The trial is separate to a case last year where another New York jury found Trump liable for sexually assaulting Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996 and subsequently defaming her in 2022, when he called her a “complete con job.”

The case is also separate from the four criminal cases and the civil fraud case Trump faces.
