Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher to assess and refine newly developed approaches to grouping of multicomponent nanomaterials to streamline information gathering and support their safe and sustainable development.

The research is funded by a European Commission Horizon 2020 grant.

The successful candidate will contribute to the European Project SUNSHINE (https://www.h2020sunshine.eu/about-the-project). The goal of SUNSHINE is to develop an e-infrastructure to support industry to develop safe and sustainable multicomponent nanomaterials and advanced materials, while reducing the need to use animal testing.

Detailed Description

The researcher at Heriot Watt University will apply the newly developed template to a range of case studies. The information required will be gained from the literature where available (supported by an intern), along with targeted laboratory in vitro experimental work will also be required to fill data gaps. Through application of the case studies the researcher will be able to assess the ability of the new template to support grouping of multicomponent nanomaterials and to apply this information to inform the safe and sustainable design of new products.

Key duties and responsibilities

The post holder is required to:

  • Conduct literature searches to identify existing data in a systematic manner and record the results.
  • Collect hazard information and data from the most relevant publications.
  • Apply the identified data to case studies using the newly developed grouping template.
  • Identify gaps in data and knowledge that prevent grouping of the case studies.
  • Conduct in vitro experiments with simple (single cell types) and complex (multiple cell types, e.g., air liquid interface of lung or gut wall) in vitro models.

 

Essential Criteria 

Applicants must have:

  • BSc (at least 2:1) and PhD degrees in a relevant subject area, e.g., toxicology, pharmacology, cell biology, biomedical sciences, biochemistry.
  • Ability to perform literature searches and write literature reviews (including a critical appraisal of the literature)
  • Experience of designing experiments, problem solving, performing data analysis and interpretation, and conducting appropriate statistical analyses
