HealthTechONE, an overarching initiative at Imperial College, supports and promotes the Translation of HealthTech/MedTech research across the organisation.

As part of HealthTechONE, the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), Biomedical Engineering Theme is positioned at the interface between bioengineering innovations and clinical practice and aims to drive the translation of original research to increase the efficiency, accuracy, and reach of healthcare technologies and devices to enable less invasive, more cost effective, and more equitable healthcare and to realise currently unavailable procedures and therapies.

The Research Associates are key members of the technology development teams, with deep technical skills relevant to the translational health/medical technologies portfolio. They will provide technical support to product/technology development and will also be responsible for preparing and managing evidence generation studies.

Key duties and responsibilities

An experienced biomedical researcher, you will contribute to the development of selected Health and Medical Technologies as part of a team of engineers, scientists and clinical experts. Your role will be pivotal in facilitating interactions with clinical research staff and local PIEP groups to establish the unmet clinical need initially, and a co-designing approach throughout. You will work closely with principal investigators, clinical academics and researchers to support them where required, and progress the technology.

An enthusiastic individual, your will also interface with colleagues in the wider BRC group and the Imperial College Ethics team to plan and deliver clinical studies in line with all applicable processes, as well as with Imperial Industry Partnership and Commercialisation colleagues to establish the IP strategy and route to impact.

You will provide technical guidance to other researchers, support the generation of required Quality management.

System (QMS) documentation, progress reports, and oversee the work of suppliers engaged in your projects.

Essential requirements

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals
  • Practical experience in a broad range of biomedical core research techniques
  • Practical experience developing technologies within a translation research environment.
  • Knowledge of biomedical core research techniques including at least one of the following: mechanical design and manufacture, signal processing, software development, machine learning, electronics, implant technology
  • Knowledge of PIEP processes
  • Knowledge of ethically approved research
  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature and currently available treatments
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts and creative approach to problem-solving
