Background
This post is funded for five years by the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). The Centre, led by University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, is a joint initiative along with six other organisations to support research into inflammatory diseases.
This post is based within the Cancer theme of the BRC, led by Professor Joanna Parish who will be the direct line manager for this post. The project is specifically designed to understand how oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) drives cancer development and how we can target these infections to design targeted novel therapies. The Parish lab uses state-of-the-art primary cell-based models of HPV infection to define molecular signatures for diagnosis, prediction and therapy. We will interrogate HPV-induced transcriptional reprogramming of primary human cells through the analysis of virus-induced structural and functional chromatin changes. Future work will then aim to identify and develop novel targeted treatments for HPV-driven disease.
The appointed postdoctoral scientist will study host factor and epigenetic regulation of HPV transcription control in primary human tonsil keratinocytes using ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq and ATAC-Seq. As such, the successful candidate will have demonstrable expertise in cell culture and molecular biology methods. Experience with primary cell cultures and computational analysis of next generation sequencing data is highly desirable.
Main Duties
- Design and conduct laboratory-based experiments under the guidance of the research supervisor to test the project hypotheses and complete project aims
- Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
- Contribute to writing bids for research funding
- Analyse and interpret data
- Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
- Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
- Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
- Design and develop new models, techniques and methods
Person Specification
- First degree in area of specialism and a PhD (or near to completion) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
- Experience of primary cell culture methods
- Experience in methods of chromatin analysis including ChIP/ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq and/or ATAC-Seq
- Experience in PCR techniques including RT-qPCR and endpoint PCR.
- Experience of cell culture and analysis of protein expression technology such as SDS-PAGE
- High level analytical capability
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
