This 16-month post offers an exciting career development opportunity for an ambitious researcher with interest in the economics of obesity and food system research.  It will be suited to someone with skills in applied health economics or quantitative methods, in particular in the context of population health intervention research. The post will contribute to the delivery of the SALIENT Food system trials for healthier people and planet which is about designing interventions to support healthier eating.  Based within the Centre for Economics of Obesity, the post will join a team of researchers working together to systematically generate economics evidence that justifies investment in the treatment and prevention of obesity.

The Centre is supported by the National Institute of Health Research and hosts an established team of health economists led by Prof Emma Frew.  The Centre has research partners and collaborators across the West Midlands region as well as a public advisory group engaged in the research. 

Role Summary

  • To contribute to evidence synthesis reviewing the economic evidence that will underpin the interventions. 
  • To undertake the development, implementation, analysis and reporting of the economic evaluations of interventions prioritised for delivery. 

Main Duties

  • To work closely with SALIENT colleagues to undertake rapid evidence reviews that will inform the evaluation of the SALIENT interventions. 
  • To undertake the economic evaluation of selected interventions within SALIENT by making use of existing data alongside the collection of new data.
  • To undertake economic evaluation appropriate to a quasi- or a natural-experimental design, if necessary. 
  • To help with synthesising evidence across all interventions to draw conclusions and report on overall impacts of the programme of work on food system change.
  • Together with the wider scientific team contribute towards writing study reports for the external collaborators and stakeholders. 

Person Specification

  • MSc (or equivalent) in Health Economics 
  • Knowledge of applied health economics relevant to working within the ‘SALIENT’ consortium.
  • Research experience and scholarship within health economics, preferably with knowledge and understanding of food systems.
  • Ideally, exposure or an understanding of system science methods
