The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement for International Development Week, which runs from February 4 to 10 in 2024:

“This week, we celebrate the people and organizations advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Guided by their compassion and belief in a better world, they are catalyzing positive change at home and abroad.

“Canada recognizes that the world shares many challenges, and we must work together to overcome them: a crisis in one part of the globe can have a direct impact on Canadians at home. Similarly, when Canada supports low- and middle-income countries in their efforts to become more sustainable, inclusive and prosperous, the positive impacts can also stretch far beyond their borders.

“Think of the momentum created by a project such as Green Rising, a UNICEF and Generation Unlimited joint initiative that will connect 10 million young people with climate-focused education, skills training and green job opportunities. Consider the potential that is being unlocked in Mali, where Farm Radio International’s programming is helping vulnerable adolescent girls to stay in school while also providing training and jobs for local broadcasters. And look to Colombia, where Save the Children Canada is providing safe, supportive and inclusive spaces for girls and boys affected by the crisis on the Venezuelan border—work that is not only improving education and shifting gender norms, but is also breaking down barriers between Venezuelan migrants and host communities.

These are just a few examples of how Canada’s international development partnerships are working to advance human rights, create opportunities and achieve the SDGs. I encourage all Canadians to join activities in your community or online during International Development Week. Get informed, get inspired and get involved to #GoForTheGoals with us!”
