About us
The Division of Biosciences has an outstanding international reputation, ranking 8th in the QS World University Rankings for biological sciences. We host a community of over 500 staff covering a diverse portfolio from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies, to ecology and the environment. Much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, and we sit at the nexus of a broad range of interdisciplinary collaborations across UCL. Our activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms & state of the art equipment, and a substantial number of postgraduate research students integrated within doctoral research programmes. The Division offers a range of undergraduate programmes & an expanding number of Masters Programmes. Research is integrated into our degrees giving students the opportunity to experience original contributions to their field of study.
About the role
The UCL Division of Biosciences is seeking to recruit UCL Excellence Fellows – the highest calibre early career researchers from across the globe – supporting them to establish their independent career and become outstanding research leaders of the future across the full range of disciplines in the life sciences.

Because all applicants must secure a sponsor prior to application and due to limited places, we are inviting applications to be submitted to Biosciences ahead of the final submission deadline in October.
The Deadline for submission to the relevant Research Department is: Midnight on 17 September 2023.
Applications will then be reviewed and triaged before being put forward to the next round.
About you
Candidates are expected to have an exceptional track record in their research field, with a growing reputation for the quality of their research. Not yet have established an independent career or led a research group and have their own original & ambitious research vision.
Fellows are expected to carry out innovative & visionary research Within the first two years, apply for external funding (e.g. fellowship) to enable them to establish an independent research career (e.g., Wellcome Career Development Award, MRC Career Development Award, UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships).
What we offer
Sponsored fellows will receive substantial academic & administrative support to apply for external group leader fellowships. For successful fellows, we will provide support to ensure they can successfully establish their research group, gain opportunities to develop teaching skills & play a full role in the running of the department. Fellows will also benefit from career development and mentoring programmes, membership of the Biosciences Fellowship Network, access to additional support for their research, opportunities to attract PhD students through PhD programs and additional funding support beyond the end of the fellowship. We expect fellows to develop into strong candidates for permanent positions within the department, or elsewhere.
