Three people have been found dead and a man has been arrested after police declared a “major incident” in the British city of Nottingham.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a killing rampage in the city, which is located three hours north of London.

Police said they were called just after 4am when two people were found dead in the street.

Officers were then called to another incident just over a mile away when a van had attempted to run over three people. They are currently being treated in hospital.

A third man was also found dead nearby.

Police remain at the scene and have warned the public to stay away.

In a statement, Nottinghamshire Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “This is an horrific and tragic incident which has claimed the lives of three people.

“We believe these three incidents are all linked and we have a man in custody.

“This investigation is at its early stages and a team of detectives is working to establish exactly what has happened.

“We ask the public to be patient while inquiries continue.”

Six roads are shut and tram services cancelled as police deal with the incident, The Sun reports.

Liaison officers dressed in purple body armour and helmets are at the scene.

They are National inter-agency liaison officers (NILO), an elite paramedic force set up in the wake of the Manchester Arena bombings.

Chief Inspector Neil Humphries, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Officers are currently on scene at multiple road closures due to an ongoing incident.”

“Please avoid these areas as they are expected to remain closed for some time.”

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said: “We are currently in attendance at an incident in the city centre assisting @nottspolice

“There has been disruption to @NETTram‘s – keep updated on their social media for any changes throughout the day.

“We ask that people avoid the area.”
