Disruption in oil production and distribution due to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran has played a pivotal role in this price surge.
The fluctuation in motor fuel costs has been notable since June when an agreement between the US and Iran led to a temporary decrease in prices. However, with the re-emergence of tensions, prices have begun to climb once again. With wholesale oil prices back over $100 per barrel, experts indicate that motorists may face sustained high costs at the pump.
Impact of Oil Prices on Fuel Costs
Crude oil serves as a primary component for both petrol and diesel, meaning escalations in wholesale oil prices directly translate into increased expenses for consumers refueling their vehicles. Insights from analysts reveal that a $10 increase in the price per barrel often correlates with an approximate 7p rise in pump prices.
Since the onset of the conflict, the value of a barrel of Brent crude oil, a global pricing benchmark, has exhibited significant volatility. The backdrop of ongoing conflicts typically leads to price increases, while peace initiatives result in price drops. Prior to the conflict, Brent crude was priced around $70 per barrel, but this figure surged past $120 amid wartime activities. Following the June peace framework, the price fell back to roughly $70, although it has rebounded to over $100 following the failure of peace discussions.
In recent weeks, there has been a noticeable resurgence in petrol and diesel prices, with petrol climbing from an average of 150.59p in July to its current figure. The price of diesel, which has now reached 191.68p a litre, is edging closer to its past record high of 199.05p, observed in June 2022. In comparison, petrol remains below its peak of 191.5p recorded during the summer of the previous year.
Financial Implications for Consumers
This rise translates to substantial costs for motorists. Filling a 55-litre family car with unleaded petrol now exceeds £93, while diesel comes in at over £105. The delay in adjustments at fuel pumps signifies a span of about two weeks before wholesale oil price fluctuations are reflected in retail prices.
Despite concerns about price gouging, fuel retailers have firmly rejected these allegations. The regulatory body overseeing markets stated it has not identified any evidence suggesting retailers are manipulating prices took advantage of the current crisis.
In May, a government initiative named Fuel Finder was introduced, enabling drivers to compare fuel costs across different petrol stations throughout the UK.

This strait is crucial for transporting a significant share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, with about 20% of these resources moving through this strategic corridor.
