The Green Party has selected Zack Polanski as its candidate in the upcoming by-election for the seat previously held by Sir Keir Starmer. Polanski, who serves on the London Assembly, is set to contest in Holborn and St Pancras on October 8, with hopes of becoming a Member of Parliament.
His selection by the Camden Green Party came ahead of local councillor Hamza Chowdhury. Following the announcement, Polanski expressed confidence despite acknowledging the Greens' underdog status in the race. He stated that the party possesses momentum and could achieve victory.
Polanski's Connection to Camden
Polanski emphasized his ties to Camden, stating he has called it home since relocating to London two decades ago. His experience of frequently moving around the area resonates with many residents of Holborn and St Pancras, who are currently facing economic challenges. He noted, “My story of constantly moving around flats is such a common story for Londoners and I know so many people are struggling right now.”

He advocates that a vote for the Green Party would communicate a powerful message to both the local council and the government about the need for better community support. Polanski expressed optimism about his prospects while stressing the importance of collective action.
The upcoming election presents a critical opportunity for the Greens to challenge Labour's long-standing dominance in this inner London constituency, which has been held by the party since its establishment in 1983. The Labour Party’s candidate, Sagal Abdi-Wali, currently leads Camden Council.
This by-election will serve as an early test of the current Labour leadership under Andy Burnham, as well as measuring Polanski's ability to position the Greens as a viable alternative to Labour in urban areas.
